Snoring vs Sleep Apnea: How Can You Tell the Difference?

Snoring vs Sleep Apnea: How Can You Tell the Difference?

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are related, but they are not the same thing. Snoring is sound produced by vibration in the upper airway. OSA involves repeated obstruction of breathing during sleep. A person can snore without OSA, and the loudness of snoring does not measure apnea severity.

Signs that deserve medical attention

Witnessed breathing pauses, gasping or choking during sleep, persistent daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing sleep and morning headaches can increase concern for sleep apnea. They still do not confirm the diagnosis. NHLBI's sleep apnea overview describes common symptoms and the role of medical evaluation.

Can a phone recording or smartwatch diagnose sleep apnea?

Recordings and consumer devices can provide useful observations to discuss with a clinician, but they are not a substitute for an appropriately selected diagnostic sleep study. The AASM guideline sets out when polysomnography or home sleep apnea testing is used in adults.

Should a snorer buy an automatic CPAP?

Not simply because the machine is automatic. PAP therapy should follow diagnosis and clinical guidance. If OSA is confirmed, the prescribed mode, pressure strategy and mask can then be matched to suitable equipment. Start with what OSA is and the CPAP buying guide for India.
