Rent or Buy CPAP, BiPAP or Oxygen Equipment? A Decision Guide

Rent or Buy CPAP, BiPAP or Oxygen Equipment? A Decision Guide

Rent versus buy is a commercial decision only after the clinical requirement is clear. A cheaper rental is not useful if it cannot supply the prescribed PAP mode, oxygen flow/delivery requirement or required accessories.

When rental may be practical

  • A genuinely short-term prescribed need
  • A clinician-directed trial where rental terms support the required equipment
  • Temporary recovery when duration is uncertain
  • A bridge while waiting for a long-term device, where clinically appropriate

When purchase may be practical

  • Long-term stable therapy
  • Need for consistent access to the same device and accessories
  • Rental cost approaches ownership cost over the expected duration
  • The user values a new device, documented warranty and predictable service history

Compare the complete economics

Rental Purchase
Deposit and recurring rental fee Upfront device cost
Delivery/collection charges Financing/payment cost if applicable
Who pays for masks, tubing, filters and chambers? Ongoing consumables and replacement parts
Damage/late-return liability Warranty exclusions and post-warranty service
Replacement/backup terms during faults Owner's backup plan during faults

Rental hygiene and device history

Ask how the provider cleans and processes reusable equipment between users, which components are new/personal-use, whether the machine's service history is documented, and how faults are handled. Do not assume every accessory should be reused.

Clinical compatibility comes before price

For PAP, verify prescribed mode/settings and compatible interface. For oxygen, verify the prescribed flow/delivery requirement and backup plan. Do not substitute equipment simply because a rental unit is immediately available.

Questions to ask before signing

  1. What exact make/model will I receive?
  2. Is it new, refurbished or previously rented?
  3. Which accessories are included and which are personal-use?
  4. Who handles cleaning, maintenance and breakdowns?
  5. What happens if the prescription changes?
  6. What are deposit, minimum term, cancellation and late-return rules?
  7. Can rental payments convert toward purchase, if offered?
  8. What backup is provided if the device fails?
