A PAP prescription or treatment instruction may contain abbreviations that look like product specifications but are actually clinical treatment parameters. Understanding the terminology can help you compare compatible equipment without independently changing the treatment.
Start with the therapy mode
Look first for the prescribed mode: fixed CPAP, auto-adjusting PAP/APAP, bilevel PAP or another form of noninvasive ventilation. These are not interchangeable product categories.
Fixed CPAP pressure
A fixed CPAP treatment plan may specify a therapeutic pressure, commonly expressed in cm H2O. The exact value is a clinical setting and should be configured according to the treatment plan rather than selected by a seller because a particular pressure feels more comfortable.
APAP minimum and maximum
APAP commonly operates between configured minimum and maximum pressure limits. Automatic adjustment happens inside those boundaries; it is not an unrestricted diagnostic system.
IPAP and EPAP on bilevel therapy
On bilevel therapy, IPAP refers to inspiratory positive airway pressure and EPAP to expiratory positive airway pressure. The difference between them contributes to pressure support. More advanced prescriptions can contain additional parameters, depending on the device and clinical mode.
Backup rate and advanced modes
If a prescription specifies a backup rate, timed mode, volume-assured function or another advanced ventilation parameter, match the prescription to the exact device's approved modes and instructions for use. Do not assume that every product marketed as “BiPAP” provides the same modes.
What if the prescription is incomplete?
Do not fill in missing clinical information by copying settings from another person, using a retailer default or selecting values from an internet article. Ask the prescribing or treating professional for clarification.
The AASM emphasizes that PAP treatment should be based on objective OSA testing and accompanied by adequate follow-up and efficacy/usage monitoring. Source: AASM. NHLBI similarly describes pressure setting as an area where the healthcare provider may assist the patient. Source: NHLBI.
What Respmart can verify
With an established treatment requirement, Respmart can help compare whether a listed device has the requested mode, identify documented accessories, check mask and consumable availability, explain package contents and discuss warranty or delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Can Respmart interpret my sleep study and prescribe a pressure?
No. Respmart can explain product specifications. Clinical interpretation and treatment-setting decisions should remain with an appropriately qualified professional.
Are IPAP and EPAP product specifications?
They are treatment settings used in bilevel therapy. A machine also has a supported operating range, but that does not mean every value in that range is appropriate for an individual.
Does an auto machine choose the correct prescription by itself?
No. Automatic algorithms operate within configured parameters and should be used within an appropriate clinical treatment pathway.
