Respiratory Equipment for Older Adults: A Caregiver Selection Guide

Respiratory Equipment for Older Adults: A Caregiver’s Selection Guide

For an older adult, the clinically correct device must also be usable in everyday life. Vision, hearing, hand strength, cognition, mobility, mask handling, alarm recognition and caregiver availability can determine whether equipment is practical at home.

Match the equipment to the treatment goal

Equipment Question to clarify first
CPAP/APAP Has sleep apnea been objectively evaluated and PAP prescribed?
BiPAP/NIV What exact mode and settings has the clinical team specified?
Oxygen concentrator What oxygen prescription, flow/delivery requirements and backup plan apply?
Nebulizer What prescribed medication/device instructions apply?
Pulse oximeter How will readings be used, and what are the limitations of home SpO₂?

Caregiver usability audit

  • Can the user see and understand the controls/display?
  • Can they put on and remove the mask safely?
  • Can they refill or clean components according to instructions?
  • Can they recognize alarms and know whom to call?
  • Is tubing arranged to reduce trip risk?
  • Is the device easy to move if mobility is limited?
  • Is there a realistic plan for power cuts and emergencies?
  • Can replacement supplies and service be obtained locally?

Do not simplify by changing the prescribed therapy

A simpler-looking machine is not a safe substitute if it lacks the required mode or capability. Instead, ask whether the prescribed therapy can be delivered through equipment with clearer controls, better caregiver support or easier maintenance.

Home safety

Keep walkways and tubing organized. For oxygen, follow fire-safety instructions rigorously and keep oxygen away from smoking/open flames. For PAP/NIV, keep air inlets unobstructed and use compatible power accessories.

See the caregiver guide to home oxygen and PAP, home oxygen saturation guide and mask fitting guide.

When to seek urgent help

Severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, bluish lips/face, collapse or another emergency symptom needs urgent medical assessment rather than equipment shopping.
