A PAP backup plan must be built around the exact machine and the user's clinical situation. Battery runtime cannot be estimated safely from “CPAP” or “BiPAP” alone because power draw changes by model, pressure, humidifier, heated tubing and accessory use.
Five numbers/documents to collect first
- Exact PAP model
- Manufacturer power-supply specification
- Manufacturer-approved DC/battery cable or backup options
- Battery energy rating (Wh), not only marketing terms such as “hours”
- Whether humidification/heated tubing will be used during backup operation
Why generic runtime promises are unreliable
A battery may last very differently depending on device load and conversion losses. Heated humidification can materially increase consumption. Use runtime information supplied for the exact device/battery combination, then test the setup under realistic conditions before relying on it.
UPS, inverter, DC battery or portable power station?
| Option | What to verify |
|---|---|
| UPS/inverter | Output waveform, continuous capacity, transfer behavior and compatibility with the PAP power supply. |
| DC battery | Exact voltage, connector and manufacturer-approved cable. |
| Portable power station | Usable Wh capacity, AC/DC output, charging time and PAP compatibility. |
| Generator | Safe placement, ventilation, electrical quality and local operating instructions. |
Do not solve a power problem by changing therapy
Do not lower pressure, disable clinically necessary settings or substitute CPAP/BiPAP modes simply to extend battery life. If outages create a significant medical risk, discuss an individualized contingency plan with the treating clinician.
Power-cut checklist
- Test the backup before monsoon/outage season.
- Label cables for the exact device.
- Keep batteries charged according to manufacturer instructions.
- Know whether humidification should be disabled during backup and whether that is acceptable for the user.
- Keep contact details for clinical and equipment support.
For travel, read the respiratory-equipment travel checklist. For current PAP products, see CPAP/APAP and BiPAP/BPAP.
Frequently asked questions
Can any 12V battery run a CPAP?
No. Voltage, connector, cable and conversion requirements are model-specific.
Can I use a power bank with USB?
Only when the exact PAP model and power solution are documented as compatible. Many standard USB power banks are not suitable.
Should I turn off the humidifier to save battery?
Humidification can increase power use, but follow the exact device guidance and consider comfort/clinical needs. Do not make therapy changes solely to extend runtime.
