Air pollution can worsen respiratory and cardiovascular health, but oxygen concentrators and PAP machines are not general-purpose pollution treatments. Exposure reduction, indoor air cleaning, respiratory protection and prescribed medical therapy address different problems.
Start by separating four different goals
| Goal | Relevant approach |
|---|---|
| Reduce outdoor exposure | Use local air-quality information and reduce exposure during severe pollution when feasible. |
| Reduce inhaled particles | Appropriate respiratory protection and indoor air-quality measures may reduce exposure. |
| Treat a diagnosed respiratory condition | Use clinician-directed medicines or respiratory equipment for that condition. |
| Treat documented low blood oxygen | Supplemental oxygen may be prescribed when clinically indicated; it is not an air purifier. |
What an oxygen concentrator does
An oxygen concentrator supplies oxygen-enriched gas for patients who have a documented oxygen requirement. It does not remove pollution from the room and should not be started because the outdoor AQI is high.
What CPAP/BiPAP does
PAP devices create positive airway pressure for prescribed sleep-disordered breathing or selected ventilation needs. They are not substitutes for pollution control or air purification.
Indoor air cleaners are a separate category
Portable air cleaners and HVAC filtration are designed to reduce certain airborne particles in indoor spaces. Their performance depends on room size, airflow, filter efficiency and operation. They do not replace prescribed treatment for asthma, COPD, sleep apnea or hypoxemia.
For indoor-air guidance, see the U.S. EPA guide to air cleaners and filters in the home. For broader health information, see the WHO air-pollution resource.
When symptoms need medical assessment
Worsening wheeze, breathlessness or cough in polluted conditions may need a clinician's review, particularly in people with asthma, COPD or cardiovascular disease. Severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, bluish lips/face or collapse requires urgent care.
